Professor McCarthy's previous book Treaty and Covenant (1963) is recognized as a standard work, and this surveys is stamped with the same authority. It begins with a study of the concept of 'covenant', followed by a thorough investigation of the comparison between Old Testament covenant and ancient vassal treaties, and the so-called Covenant-Formula.
