The spirit of Citeaux is indeed an amazing phenomenon. No one has yet fully calculated its impact upon the formation of Westren culture and civilization. It brought to a close the great patristic era and had its part to play in the stormy beginnings of the scholastic period. Incarnated in Bernard of Clairvaux, its influence reached every corner of the then Christian world.
