Times of Grace: The Sign of Forty in the Bible

The biblical passages quoted in the course of this work are based upon the Douay-Rheims version of the Bible, with frequent modifications incorporating the rendering of the French version of the Bible of Jerusalem. The name Yahweh has been replaced with Everlasting (In French, Eternel). This, we admit, is a very inadequate word and not so expressive as its Hebrew equivalent; but how else to emphasize the fact that we are dealing with a personal name-the name of God, who has revealed himself and appeared to Moses? We might have employed the name Lord as do the Masoretic text, the Septuagint, and the Vulgate. Unfortunately, this word has lost too much of its original meaning for us moderns.
