An Anthology of the Love of God

IF the fashion of autobiography became even more widespread than it is, and more people imitated Marcus Aurelius in the pious tributes of affectionate gratitude which make up the first chapter of his famous soliloquies, it might be surprising to find in how many cases the name of Evelyn Underhill appeared. She has been dead twelve years. her books are never advertised, and yet they go on having a steady sale. With some notable writers of our own day their death seemed almost the end of their reputation. But Evelyn Underhill still exerts a potent influence. If those who feel themselves her debtors were further to imitate Marcus Aurelius by specifying the essential cause of their gratitude, the answer might very well be the title chosen for this anthology. What greater gift could one give to another than reassurance on this fundamental issue? This, to many people, as it was to Bishop Gore, is the most difficult of all dogmas, yet it is the one above all others about which they long to reach certitude.
