The Local Authority Social Services Act of 1970 coordinated the social work of local authorities, which previously was divided between health departments, child care departments, and welfare services departments. Social workes now carry out these specialized duties within the Social Services departments of the local authorities, i.e. within the offices of the metropolitan districts.
