The Church After the Council
Now is the time, in trust and uncertainty, in humility and yet confidence, for the Church to take up its appointed tasks. The Church After the Council is a mature reflection on just what these imminent tasks might be. Yet it is a human estimate, the author writes, for the true dimensions of the renewal can be set only by the guiding Spirit. It is a formulation of duties and tasks which tomorrow may turn out to have been completely wrong. but what is important is that the Council, and now all the faithful of the Church, have come to recognize that the Kairos of the Church is near at hand, or has arrived. Because the Church is her people, each Christian is therefore called upon to transform himself, to undertake the impossible. The Church After the Council is not, therefore, a program for renewal, or a course in how to do the impossible. Rather, is is a definition of general intentions, and itself a first bold, uncertain step into the future.
