The priest spoke of him not only as a model to be imitated, and a patron to be honored, but already a protector to be invoked, if not in public, at least in the secret of one's heart, He honoured him as the principal founder of the Society, a fact which has been ac credited to him already by tradition, the universal voice which is not deceived. He expressed the general desire of Conferences for the day on which, with the sanction of the Church, it would be given to them to worship him solemnly in public. Examining the conditions required by the Church for such elevation, the venerable preacher gave it as his opinion that they were admirably fulfilled by the life and the doctrine and the good works of that just man by a life of piety and innocence, by a doctrine Of propaganda of faith by good works of corporal and spiritual amelioration, which have together made him an incomparable apostle of truth and charity in the world.
