A Catechetical Directory such as 'We Live and Teach Christ Jesus' is not intended to have the force of Church legislation, but rather it should be viewed as a 'Service Document', authoritative yet provisional and open to further development rather than definitive or closed. The Document offers guidelines and directions to those responsible for Religious Education at all levels, within which Programmes in Religious Education in New Zealand must continue to develop. Different Programmes will be needed for the various groupings in our society and leaders who know and understand their people will be charged to formulate and guide these Programmes.
