The author, a front-line soldier of the first world war, as well as a priest with long pastoral and educational experience, was invaluable qualifications for writing on so much a subject; a wide knowledge of the world, of human nature and human relationships, as well as a deep understanding of those spiritual writers he evidently finds most congenial: St. Francis de Sales, Fenelon, Sailer and Newman.
