The Sermon on the Mount: Proclamation and Exhortation
The beginning of the letter to the Hebrews is famous: In many and various ways God spoke of old to our fathers by the prophets; but in these last days he has spoken to us by a Son (1:1-2a). This Son, Our Lord Jesus Christ, is called in v. 3 the reflection of the glory of God and the very stamp of his nature. Jesus brought good news in the name of God, and he called people to respond. This double aspect of message and call, of proclamation and exhortation, is eminently present in Jesus first programmatic sermon. It is for all of us, therefore, to listen to the definitive word of God and to act on it.
