The Restless Believers
The crisis of unbelief among the young intellectuals in America is reaching large proportions. For most it is not a question of laziness. It does not ride or fall on theological issues as in the Reformation. The crisis of faith among American students today is focused on the relevance of religion, whether God, or the Church, or religion in general can offer any meaning to their lives in a complex and demanding world. For many of them the Church has become part of the establishment, a bogeyman the saddles them with pointless rules on sex fish on Friday and Mass on Sunday. It speaks but does not listen in return. It preaches freedom but its tentacles stifle personal initiative.
