Pope John Paul II encyclical, Laboren Exercens, has lifted Catholic social teaching to a new height. The first Polish Pope in history, a citizen of the second world, brings to his task a special sensitivity and his own political experience. In the critical treatment of industrial society and its present crises he constantly looks in two directions toward the communist countries of Eastern Europe and toward the capitalist societies of the West.
