In this book I have tried to show how, in every department of human life, symbolic expression is the way to creative freedom. I do not underestimate the importance of ordered structures or of signs ehich carry a uniform interpretation to all the members of a particular society. But human experience has shown that there is always the danger that a system of order, a framework of unambiguous signs, will become ends in themselves to be rigidly imporsed and preserved from any possible deviation. In contrast to all forms of totalitarianism, the symbols stands for openness, for pointing towards alternative possibilities, for readiness to experiment in the hope of gaining a fuller understanding of reality.
