The Miracle Stories of the Synoptic Gospels
The stories of miracles performed by Jesus occupy a prominent place in each gospel, and they have continued to be of importance to Christian tradition. Yet today the very concept of miracle is subject to misunderstanding and can cause such a stumbling-block as to elicit the remark 'I believe not because of miracles, but in spite of them!' Fr Hendrickx considers first how the ancient and biblical world thought of and represented miracles, and the significance of the stories of Jesus miracles as first narrated, to subsequent hearers and readers, and in various modern approaches. He then studies eight individual miracles found in the synoptic gospel: the healings of the demoniac in the synagogue, Peter's mother-in-law, a leper, the paralytic, and the man with a withered hand; the stilling of the storm; the raising of the widow's son; and the healing of ten lepers. He concludes with a chapter on the use of these stories in preaching. There is a generous and up-to-date bibliography.
