The Liturgy That Does Justice
It is not easy to define liturgy. The word is used equivocally today. The classical definition means a function undertaken on behalf of the people such as some public service. One of the meanings of liturgy in the New Testament is that of divine worship. Early in the history of the church the word was restricted to meaning the Mass. This is still the meaning in the churches of the East. There is no agreement among the Christian churches today on the meaning of liturgy.
