This volume, the first of the Old Testament series in the New Clarendon Bible, differs in two important ways from the corresponding volume contributed by Dr. W.L. Wardle to the original Clarendon Bible. The history and the religion are treated not separately, but together, so far is may be, in chronological sequence; and the historical narrative, which in Dr. Wardle's book ended with Ezra, is here continued as far as the Maccabaean Revolt.
