The Gospels for Preachers and Teachers
Modern exegesis has revealed that the gospels are richer and deeper, and less straightforward, than previous generations has supposed. The contemporary preacher or teacher must either make the very considerable effort to convey this real depth and complexity to his congregation or class, or he must compromise with what he knows to be truth. How can he meet this challenge, bridge this gap between the gospel truth that exegesis reveals and the truth to be preached or taught to his non-academic hearers? Franz Kamphaus has provided a detailed 'how to' and 'how not to' answer this problem. On the positive side, he takes three groups of gospel passages on the risen Lord and Easter events, on the miracle stories, and on the infancy narratives and leads us through them step by step, showing how the full meaning can be brought out and presented to a nonspecialist audience. Then. on the negative side, he gives examples from published sermon material on the temptations and pitfalls to be avoided.
