Any commentary on one of the Synoptic Gospels may aim either to present the historicity of the events and teaching recorded, or it may aim exposition making clear the religious message which the evangelist wished to convey to his readers through his narratives and by the arrangement of the Gospel as a whole. These alternatives are not always mutually exclusive. Although this commentary on the Gospel of Matthew stresses interpretation, it is also concerned with questions of historicity.
