The Good and the True: An Introduction to Christian Ethics
This book sets out to discuss three important inter-related questions which, the author argues, are not treated together in any other book. What is right or wrong in regard to the major practical issues that now face us, such as nuclear disarmament, abortion, capital punishment and so on? When we believe that we know what is right, how can we find the moral strength to do it? What exctly is Christian ethics, and how is it related to ethics in general? This leads him to divide his book into three parts. The first, on practical ethics, discusses issues relating to violence, sex and politics. The second, on personal ethics, discusses not so much private moral questions as the development of personal virtues and the internal struggles that all people face when they try to lead a moral life. The third, on moral philosophy, tries to understand the nature of Christian ethics as a whole and asks how far Christian ethics are different from, say, humanist ethics. It also asks how far one can know what is good, and perhaps most important of all how the word good is related to the idea of God.
