The God of Life
Gustavo Gutierrez latest and most moving book opens with a crowd of two million people gathered in his native Lima, Peru, to greet John Paul II. A couple speak for them all: 'Holy Father, we are hungry. We suffer affliction, we lack work, we are sick. Our hearts are crushed by suffering as we see our tubercular wives giving birth, our children dying, our sons and daughters growing up weak and without a future. But despite all this, we believe in the God of life, and we struggle for this life in the face of death. How can such people believe in a God of life? That is what this book explains. It is built round three questions and three answers. What is God? A God who is Father. Where is God? In the Kingdom which Jesus proclaims. How are we to speak of God? According to the prompting of the Spirit. Questions and answers are based on the Bible indeed the whole book is a Bible study: simple, and arising out of the experiences of an oppressed people. It is a witness to the faith of another saintly figure, who like Mother Teresa of Calcutta, is giving his life for the poor.
