The Bounds of Reason: Habermas, Lyotard and Melanie Klein on Rationality
The Bounds of Reason: Habermas, Lyotard and Melanie Klein on Rationality is a highly original and accessible analysis of the debate between modernity and postmodernity. Emilia Steuerman consebtrates on two of the debate's most prominent figures, Jurgen Habermas and Jean Francois Lyotard and explores their differences over the role of science, language and ethics. She shows how Habermas use of the reason to defend fundamental concepts of the Enlightenment, such as truth, freedom and justice, contrasts with Lyotard's postmodern rejection of rationally as a universal and objective principle. She adds a compelling dimension to this ecounter by introducing the psychoanalytic theory and practice of Melanie Klein. Steuerman clearly shows how Melanie Klein's theory of the object relations exposes the limits of both the rationalist and irrationalist positions and injects new fervour into the inquiry whether reason is an emancipatory or an enslaving force in today's world.
