When this commentary first appeared in 1970 it marked the last published contribution to Old Testament studies of one of the most prolific and respected of British biblical scholars in the twentieth century. Professor H.H. Rowley's intense interest in his subject, and his great devotion to it even in the face of physical suffering, were a great inspiration to others which lent to his reputation a deeply spiritual quality.
