Textual Sources for the Study of Hinduism
Textual Sources for the Study of Hinduism is unique in its selection of texts, many of which have never been translated into English until now; in its range of source languages, including as it does selections from Hindi, Tamil and Bengali as well as Sanskrit classics; and in its concern for certain basic, interrelated themes that run through all the selections. These themes include dharma, karma, the relationship between kings and Brahmins, the nature of ritual, and the critical transitions in the human life cycle. It is also unique in presenting not just a series of relatively short gobbets but a number of lengthy passages, together with an extensive secondary bibliography for further reading on each passage, that make it particularly suitable for classroom use: each passage could serve as the basis for classroom discussion.
