After the breakdown of socialism in Eastern Europe as ideology and as economic system the countries concerned are not only searching for an efficient economic order but under the impact of events are also trying to grasp the meaning and ultimate purpose of all economic activity. The same questions are asked by numerous developing countries which has placed their hope in socialism and have foundered in doing so.
