Sex and Power: The Rise of Women in America, Russia, Sweden, and Italy

Sex and Power is the story of the relationship between economic and political power and the rise of women from subordinate status in four countries America, Russia, Sweden, and Italy. It tells of male domination during the decades since industrialization, the invisibility of women on the public scene, their relegation to the private sphere of marriage and family, their slow progress in the face of both inner and outer resistance. Is real equality possible? What kind of man will the new woman demand? Any man at all? What are the consequences When sex and love into public arenas of power? In Rusia, women are in the work force but without political power or power over their private lives. In Sweden, the nation has become a paternalistic home; sex has been co-opted by politics. In Italy, women have confronted the paternalism of the Church and of the left, both confounded by issues of sex. In America, men have escaped from women into the competitive adventure of democratic capitalism, keeping fun and games for themselves. Some American women envy men's freedom; others view it as immaturity and prefer the sisterhood of the separate sphere; others want to draw men into their own smaller nurturing world. This is a book rich with people kings, prime ministers, philosophers from Mussolini, in the role of a feminist; and American feminist from Margaret Fuller to Theorodore Roosevelt, Betty Friedan, and Susan Brown Miller. Sex and Power is a book of candor and eloquence, a work of wide-ranging scholarship that asks intriguing and troubeling questions and provides some but not all of the answers.
