This is a history of the church from the accession of Gregory the Great to the Reformation, written by a distinguished medieval historian. Emphasizes the social and personal aspects of church history, as against the political, in order to give some idea of the medieval attitude towards life, religion and the church, of the faith and ideals of medieval churchmen, and of the actual working of the medieval church system.
