This book enlists varied experiences, complementary disciplines, different religions and traditions. From diversity, however, emerges a recognisable unity and a coherent reaction. I am sure it will meet an urgent pastoral need. It brings together the precious experience of professionals and concerned laity, of religious leaders, priests and religious. It draws on the rich moral heritage of Christian and Jewish traditions. And it makes abundantly clear that the solution to the moral problem which lies behind the questions of public health is not to be found in declarations by experts but in the perceptions and spiritual renewal of the whole people of God.
