The appearance of a book on Byzantium in the Great Ages of Man series shows how far educated opinion has moved from the once popular view, expressed by a nineteenth century English writer, that the Byzantine Empire constitutes, with scarcely an exception, the most thoroughly base and despicable from that civilization has yet assumed. The achievements of this Empire are now widely acknowledge to be an essential part of our cultural inheritance.
