Youth Violence: Program & Prospects
A variety of sources have repeatedly demonstrated that adolescents contribute to violent behavior in society well beyond and highly disproportionate to their actual numbers. School violence and vandalism, aggravated assault, gang fighting, rape, murder, and other diverse forms of moderate and severe juvenile delinquency are its major expressions. Its cost in pain, money, lost opportunity, and diminished life style becomes manifest in the behavior of teachers kept too busy managing their classrooms to teach, in elderly persons self sentenced to their apartments by fear of being mugged on the street, in monies spent on a juvenile justice system better spent elsewhere, in parents who are impotent and grieving for offspring now incarcerated though so recently children, and most especially in the wasted lives of the youngsters themselves. Unequivocally, youth violence is a major social problem in Western society.
