Writing News for Broadcast
We said in the introduction to the first edition that it was a text for broadcast journalists, present and future. We wanted to create something, if we could, which working journalists, as well as students, would find helpful. John lived to see adoption of the book in scores of radio and television newsrooms. That pleased him. It seemed to John that acceptance by professionals was the highest compliment. We wanted to preserve writings standards, but shied from dictating rules. The goal was to establish guidelines. We said, No Skill in broadcast journalism is more basic. The correspondent broadcasting from London or New Delhi or For Worth is reading a story he wrote. Often he has less than two minutes on television one minute on radio to tell his his story.
