Why Justice and Peace?
Why this rush from the Vatican and many religious orders to establish commissions of justice and peace? Is this something new or something old? Is it something borrowed from elsewhere or does it really pertain to the Gospel message? The impetus in our time for justice and peace certainly has its roots in the Second Vatican Council. In particular, the document, Gaudium et Spes, witnessed to the emergence of social concern as a major focus of the Church. The separation between the spiritual and the social needed to be discarded in favor of seeing humanity as one whole. The integrity of humanity, of the human person, of the Gospel message itself demanded this.
