War in the Pacific
The war between the Japanese Empire and the United States and British Commonwealth in the Pacific Ocean area was the bloodiest and hardest fought of the campaigns waged by the Western Allies. Yet in many general accounts of the war the Pacific is given much less weight than the European theater and its strategic significance played down. The comprehensive defeat of Japan was nevertheless a vital component of Allied war aims and the Pacific was an arena of war that taxed Allied fighting power to the limit.
