Existentialism: An Introduction, Guide and Assessment
John Macquarrie's approach is original. After surveying the historical background, he evaluates existentialism by themes. Each chapter deals with a major theme of existentialist philosophy as exemplified by thinkers from Kierkegaard to Camus, and the chapters are arranged in the order of the existential dialectic. In the course of his evaluation Macquarrie shows what existentialism has brought to other branches of learning-ethics, art, psychology, theology, education and he goes on to examine the principal objections against it. Thus the book portrays existentialism as a whole, giving the reader not only a complete review of a philosophy that has formed modern man but also a sound analysis of the strength and weakness of that information.
