The Responsible Self: An Essay in Christian Moral Philosophy
The Responsible Self is an integrating and persistent theme in the ethical thought and teaching of H. Richard Niebuhr. In any presentation of his lifelong reflections that he would have made, it would necessarily be central. The theme provided him an opportunity to be a philosopher of the Christian moral life, rather than a moral theologian who primarily explicated Biblical foundations of Christian behavior, or one who derived all his knowledge of Christian morality from theological dogmas.
