Faith and Speculation: An Essay in Philosophical Theology
The book is a continuous reflection of theistic belief its double aspect of 'working faith' and 'rational conviction'. Three central chapters explore the possibility of divine action in the world. In these Farrer illustrates the 'paradox' of double agency, divine and human, in the three fields of grace, nature and history; and shows that, far from being a theological problem or difficulty, this 'paradox' is properly the very form of practical religious thinking and understanding. Farrer prefaces these chapters with an empirical examination of the phenomenon of religion in the world as we find it; and in five concluding chapters he considers how resulting practical considerations might usefully be applied to important topics of metaphysical theology.
