Three Essays on Philippine Religious Culture

The religious landscape in the Philippines, according to Prof. Fernando G. Elesterio, provides an interesting area of study for theologians and casual students of religious culture alike. The three essays contained in this book are attempts to present to the layman certain aspects of indigenous religious culture. Pre-magellanic Religious Elements in Contemporary Filipino Culture delves into the state of religious culture of the Filipinos upon the arrival of the Spanish, and seeks to explain the rapid conversion of the natives to Catholicism. The Filipino 'Angel' and His Church is a study of the Iglesia ni Kristo, with a focus on its expansive dynamism and internal cohesiveness. The last essay discusses two indigenous religions which are very deeply rooted in nationalism and the world of the spirits. They are rude attempts to make God immanent in the world and at the same time transcedent.
