Introducing New Testament Theology
The Bible is the book of the People of God, or if dynamic terms are preferred, the Book of the two Exoduses. The Old Testament recounts the story of God choice of Israel to be his People, how the rescued them from Egyptian bondage through Moses and made a Covenant with them at Sinai, whereby they became the people of God (the first Exodus) and how through the succeeding centuries he led and guided them by his servants the prophets, disciplining them for their high destiny by blessing and by judgment, and kindling in their hearts the hope of a Day when he would crown his gracious dealing with them in the happiness of the Messianic Age. The New Testament is the story of the fulfillment of the Divine Plan of Redemption. It tells how God completed his saving Purpose by sending his Son the Messiah and inaugurating his Reign in his Ministry, Death and Resurrection. This is the Second Exodus (cf. Luke 9.3I), and this is event we call the Fact of Christ. By this phrase we mean the totality of what Jesus Christ coming involved, his person, work and words, of course, but also the Resurrection, the advent of the Spirit and the creation of the new Israel destined to become the Catholic Church.
